What duct installation is
Duct installation is the work of putting in the channels that carry heated and cooled air from your system to each room. It covers new ducts in a new build or an addition, new runs added to an existing system, and complete duct systems for homes that never had them.
The right layout depends on the home: room sizes, where the equipment sits, and how the air returns to it. Duct size and routing affect airflow and noise, so installation is a design job as much as a building one.
What the work involves
- Assessment. The installer looks at the equipment, the rooms to be served, and where ducts can physically run.
- Layout. Supply and return runs are planned, with sizes chosen for each room.
- Installation. Trunks and branches go in, connect to the equipment, and end at registers and returns. Joints are sealed, and runs are insulated where they pass through unconditioned space.
- Cleanup and check. Openings are covered during the work, debris is removed, and the system is run to confirm air reaches each room.
What changes the quote
Price varies with the size of the home, the number of runs, how hard the spaces are to reach, the duct material and insulation, and whether permits or other trades are involved. Get written quotes that list the scope so they can be compared line by line.
When to do it
Installation makes sense when ducts are missing or cannot serve a new space. If existing ducts are simply dirty or leaky, cleaning or sealing is usually the first thing to look at, and a provider should say plainly which of those you need.
How to choose a provider
- Ask who designs the layout and how they size the runs.
- Ask how joints are sealed and how ducts in attics or crawlspaces are insulated.
- Ask whether permits are included and who pulls them.
- Ask how they protect open ducts from dust during the work.
Red flags: a quote with no scope, no one willing to explain the layout, or pressure to replace ducts that a repair would fix.

Duct installation questions homeowners ask
- When does a home need new ductwork?
- New ductwork is needed in a new build, after an addition or a finished basement or attic, when a home that never had ducts gets central heating and cooling, or when old runs are damaged or undersized enough that repair no longer makes sense.
- Is duct installation the same as duct replacement?
- They overlap. Installation means putting in ducts where none exist or adding new runs. Replacement means removing existing ducts and installing new ones in their place. Say which one you need so the quote covers the right work.
- Do new ducts need cleaning too?
- Construction dust can get into open ducts during a job, so ask whether the crew covers openings while they work and cleans up afterward. Many companies offer both installation and cleaning.
- What should a quote for ductwork include?
- The layout or number of runs, the duct material and insulation, how the connections are sealed, the registers and returns being added, and who handles permits. A quote that gives a single number with no scope is hard to compare.
